Designer's Note

Converting your Halogen fixture to LED bulbs.

If you have any of these HALOGEN transformers MDL 316-0004, WH-1051E6A, the Anchorn Model # AET-D1051 (used in the IKEA fixture as a replacement), SL-728 and Relco ETV 105 PF.1/110 RN1248/110 and want to move up to a LED bulb in your fixture we recommend this driver the LED TA105WA12LED. It will help with the flicker problem when using a halogen transformer with a LED Bulb. Also note that if your dimmer has a minimum load requirement it may not perform well. If this happens let us know, you will want to isolate any problems. Your qualified electrician will have no problem with installation.

No-load electronic transformers can only be bench tested with devices capable of measuring at higher frequencies such as a Fluke 289 or better voltage meter. No-load can be measured this way with or without a load on the device. The reason for this is a lower end meter standard electricians field meter would measure voltage that are DC or < 50-60 Hz only and not this transformer.

Measurements done with a field voltage meter will give an incorrect reading or no reading at all. Please be aware of this when testing the transformer. The no-load is designed for both LED Loads, and halogen / Incandescent bulbs.

However, for standard halogen lighting loads a no-load transformer is not necessary. Total lighting supply offers a video on testing standard transformers. Request the video and we will send it to you.

No-Load transformers can be full loaded to the load specifications. However we cannot guarantee full load performance if your circuit is not engineered correctly for lighting loads, lamp type or wire gauge and length. Proper project engineering is required or downgrading the load on the transformer may be a option.

Example: With a 300watt transformer, one single run at 300watts may required a #10 gauge wire depending on the distance.
Low voltage wire when used on some loads have voltage loss based on load type, wire size and distance from the transformer. Splitting the load when available may be a good option as the amperage at full load is very high.

Early review, seems to work Review by Amber

We had approx. 8 year old flexible track lights in our kitchen that were made for halogen. We had used various hacks to make LEDs work with the transformer for most of that time (single halogen bulb, increasingly high wattage LEDs). Ultimately the transformer on one failed and we tried replacing the entire units with the latest models but they were just not good--not designed to be installed in a straight pattern and wouldn't 1:1 replace what we had. Replacing the transformers was a cheaper solution and these transformers were a 1:1 match with the old size and style. Hubs had to break out the soldering iron but said it could have been done inelegantly without that. They seem to work quite well although we don't necessarily anticipate another 8 years before failure. Direct current fixture would've been my preference but the new model was just awful. We may eventually carve out time to install LED can light dupes over the cabinets instead but this was decidedly faster and less messy than doing that at this moment. It's nice to have the fixtures working again and much better than they ever did with the wrong transformer for bulbs. (Posted on 4/13/2024)

I purchased the LTF TA105WA12LED to replace a failed unit being used with halogen lights (our second failed unit as the original one failed after a few hours). We've used the second unit for four years without issue until one day last month where it simply stopped working. I installed the new LED unit and the halogen bulbs were significantly dimmer than before. The string of lights is used for task lightning over an artist's workspace. We've found that LED lights distort color too much so we are staying with halogen bulbs as long as we can. I am sending the unit back today for a refund, LTF did pay for the shipping on the return. I repaired the old unit, it had a cold solder joint on the fuse. If (when) it fails again I will look for another solution. (Posted on 12/5/2023)

So far, so good. Replaced a 10 yr old transformer from a no-longer-in-business manufacturer. Chandelier is working and dimming. We are happy. (Posted on 10/9/2023)

Solved my problem! Review by David D

I have a 12 VAC decorative track light in my kitchen which initially came with halogen bulbs, and after replacing them with LED's we started to get a weird flicker. I have some experience with lighting fixtures but I had not seen something like this before. A Google search led me to this transformer, and I felt very confident buying it here because they listed the part number of my current transformer as being compatible (MDL 316-0004), and indeed installation was as simple as unwiring the existing one and wiring in the new one. This saved me from having to buy a whole new fixture! (Posted on 7/5/2022)

Replaced Xformer MDL PS P/N# 319-0066. The 316-0004 was another choice, but I went for the higher capacity unit, the TA105WA.
Rating on original MDL unit was 14-34W, output 1.3 Adccc, 26 Vdc max.
Rating for the replacement unit is 105W max, 12Vdc output voltage.
The TA105WD12LED works fine, but the four LED lights do not get as bright as from the MDL unit. It is acceptable though, as I probably will get more longevity out of the TA105 since I'm not driving it high up on the power curve. 105 Watts maximum, vs. the 34 Watts from the MDL unit. The TA 105 is quiet, and does not flicker at low power, unlike the MDL.
Glad not to have had to buy another entire fixture :-)
